Why Experienced Real Estate Agents Change Brokerages

Robby Almogabar and The Almogabar Team spent decades building a real estate business in Texas. Here is what they were looking for in a brokerage, and why they chose JLA Realty – Omnia Elevate.

By Jeremy Williams, Founder & Leader, Omnia Elevate  |  Published August 17, 2026

Why would an experienced real estate agent or an established real estate team decide to change brokerages?

For Robby Almogabar and The Almogabar Team, the decision was never about finding another place to hang a real estate license. After decades in the industry, they understood exactly what they needed from a brokerage to support the next stage of their business.

They wanted flexibility.

They wanted experienced, accessible leadership.

They wanted training that could actually be applied in the field.

They wanted an environment where successful agents shared ideas rather than guarded them.

They wanted room to grow their team without giving up the identity they had already built.

And they wanted the economics of the brokerage relationship to make sense.

Those priorities led The Almogabar Team to JLA Realty – Omnia Elevate.

Robby recently joined Jeremy Williams, Founder & Leader of Omnia Elevate and host of the Survive Scale Soar Podcast, for an Elevated Conversations interview about why their team made the move, what they were looking for in a real estate brokerage, and what agents should consider when evaluating whether their current brokerage is still the right place to build their business.

Why The Almogabar Team Changed Real Estate Brokerages

Robby Almogabar is not new to real estate.

He began his real estate career in 1998 before moving into new home sales in 2000. He spent roughly 14 years working with buyers in the new construction industry before joining forces with his wife, Theresa, in 2014.

Together they built The Almogabar Team, serving buyers and sellers with a particular commitment to helping veterans and their families. Their business has continued to evolve, including opportunities in commercial real estate and plans for continued team growth.

When experienced agents consider changing brokerages, the questions they ask are very different from the questions asked by someone just entering the industry.

  • They already know how transactions work.
  • They have systems.
  • They have clients.
  • They may have an established brand, CRM, marketing strategy, database, team structure, and lead-generation systems.

The question becomes simpler, and harder: can my current brokerage help me get where I want to go next?

For Robby and The Almogabar Team, answering that question led them to JLA Realty – Omnia Elevate.

More Freedom to Build the Business They Wanted

One of the factors Robby discussed was flexibility.

Their previous experience had been more geographically limited. The JLA Realty model provided an opportunity to be associated with a family-owned Texas brokerage with a presence across multiple markets — which mattered more and more as their vision for the business expanded.

Experienced agents and teams usually do not need someone telling them exactly how their business must look. They need a brokerage that provides infrastructure, compliance, leadership, and resources while leaving them room to operate.

At JLA Realty – Omnia Elevate, agents build their businesses around their own strengths, market, database, brand, and goals. There is no expectation that every successful real estate business must look exactly the same.

The Economics of Changing Real Estate Brokerages

Commission splits are not everything when choosing a real estate brokerage. But they matter.

Robby discussed how a brokerage's financial model influences an established team's ability to reinvest in growth. For experienced agents producing consistent business, the total economics of a brokerage relationship can be significant.

JLA Realty brokerage structure — as published August 17, 2026

JLA Realty's standard brokerage structure provides associates with an 80/20 commission split and a $10,000 annual brokerage cap. E&O insurance is included, there is no desk bill, and there is no additional split charged for coaching offered through Omnia Elevate. Once an associate reaches the applicable annual cap, the brokerage portion of qualifying commissions changes for the remainder of that anniversary period according to JLA Realty's policies.

Splits, caps, fees, and policies are subject to change at any time and are stated here as of the publication date above. Confirm current terms directly with JLA Realty before making a business decision. Commissions and fees charged to consumers are negotiable between broker and client and are not set by law or by any association. Nothing here is a representation, projection, or guarantee of income, leads, production, or results.

Before you change brokerages, price the whole relationship, not the headline number. Ask:

  • What is the annual cap?
  • Are there franchise or royalty fees?
  • Are there desk or office fees?
  • What happens after I cap?
  • Is E&O insurance included?
  • What technology am I required to purchase?
  • What training or coaching costs extra?
  • What costs are associated with leases?
  • What will this relationship actually cost based on my production?

The goal is not to find the cheapest brokerage. The goal is to determine whether you are receiving a strong return on the money you invest in your brokerage relationship.

Why Brokerage Culture Mattered

One of the strongest themes from Robby's conversation was culture. He found an environment where people were willing to talk openly about what was working in their businesses.

That matters, because real estate can become an unnecessarily guarded industry. Someone discovers a lead-generation strategy that works, develops a better process, or solves a common problem — and too often that knowledge stays behind closed doors.

If something is working, talk about it. If an agent discovers a strategy that generates appointments, share it. If someone learns something from a difficult transaction, help the next agent avoid the same problem.

The Omnia Elevate philosophy

Robby and Theresa have become contributors to that culture themselves through THRIVE in Action, where they share practical strategies and experiences with other agents. Robby also serves as a Director with JLA Realty – Omnia Elevate, helping agents develop their businesses and contributing to the organization's continued growth.

Why New Real Estate Agents Choose JLA Realty – Omnia Elevate

A new real estate agent needs something very different from an agent who has already closed hundreds of transactions.

Getting a real estate license teaches you how to become licensed. It does not automatically teach you how to build a real estate business.

New agents still have to learn how to generate leads, start conversations, follow up, conduct buyer consultations, work with sellers, write contracts, navigate inspections, communicate throughout a transaction, build a database, market themselves, and create systems that eventually produce predictable business.

That is why training, coaching, accessibility, and community belong at the center of a brokerage decision — and why the objective at Omnia Elevate is not simply helping someone obtain a license. It is helping an agent learn how to build a sustainable business.

Why Experienced Real Estate Agents Choose JLA Realty – Omnia Elevate

Experienced agents usually are not looking to start over. They are looking for an environment that lets them take what already works and build on it.

That can mean greater flexibility, improved economics, stronger leadership access, additional training, better collaboration, or the runway to expand a team.

Experienced agents joining JLA Realty – Omnia Elevate continue operating within their own business ecosystem. If an agent already uses a CRM such as Follow Up Boss, Lofty, Sierra Interactive, Real Geeks, or another platform, there is no philosophy that everything must be abandoned to fit one prescribed technology stack.

And if you have spent years building a recognizable personal or team brand, you should not have to erase that identity to change brokerages.

The goal is to support the business you have already built without unnecessarily getting in its way, while making sure brokerage, TREC, and other applicable requirements are followed. For an experienced agent, that combination of support and freedom can be extremely valuable.

A brokerage home for real estate teams and team leaders

Team leaders carry another set of considerations. They are not only evaluating a brokerage for themselves — they are evaluating how the decision affects every person on their team:

  • Team structure
  • Agent attraction and retention
  • Training
  • Leadership development
  • Commission structures
  • Brokerage caps
  • Compliance
  • Technology
  • Branding
  • Expansion into additional markets
  • Operational efficiency
  • Profitability

JLA Realty – Omnia Elevate starts by understanding how a team's business currently operates and where the leader wants to take it, then determines what the relationship should look like. The conversation begins with the business — not with forcing the business into a predetermined box.

Accessible Leadership Makes a Difference

Robby also spoke about leadership. There is a real difference between knowing who owns your brokerage and actually having access to the people making decisions.

John Altic, Broker/Owner of JLA Realty, remains actively involved with agents and training. Within Omnia Elevate, agents also have access to Jeremy Williams, Directors, experienced team leaders, and other members willing to help work through business challenges.

No brokerage can eliminate every difficult transaction. No coach can guarantee an agent's success. And no amount of training replaces an agent's responsibility to take action. But having experienced people available when questions come up can change the entire experience of building a real estate career.

People Over Transactions

Robby's interview revealed something much bigger than a decision to change brokerages.

After more than 25 years in real estate, the moments he remembers most are not the biggest commission checks. He shared the story of helping a 72-year-old first-time homebuyer finally accomplish something they had struggled for years to achieve.

He also told the story of working with a couple experiencing difficulties in their marriage. What began as a real estate transaction became something far more personal when Robby and Theresa prayed with them. They later learned the couple had reconciled.

Those moments never appear on a production report. They are also the reason this business matters. Homes are important. Transactions are important. Building a profitable business is important. But there are people on the other side of every contract.

What completing an Ironman can teach you about real estate

Robby's perseverance extends well beyond business. At 17 he performed at Carnegie Hall playing the trombone. At 49 he completed an Ironman triathlon — and during the race, wet socks turned into painful blisters as he moved from the bike into the marathon.

He still had to keep moving.

That is not a bad metaphor for a real estate career. You prepare. You train. You build your strategy. Then the market changes, a transaction falls apart, a lead disappears, a listing does not sell, a prospect chooses another agent — something happens that was not in the plan.

Successful agents are rarely the people who never face adversity. They are the people who learn, adjust, and keep moving forward.

Should You Change Real Estate Brokerages?

Changing brokerages is a significant business decision and should never be based on a recruiting pitch alone. Before you move, ask yourself one honest question: does my current brokerage support the business I am trying to build next?

Then do the work:

  • Evaluate the economics.
  • Evaluate the leadership.
  • Evaluate the training.
  • Evaluate the culture.
  • Evaluate the technology.
  • Evaluate the flexibility.
  • Evaluate the opportunities for growth.
  • Talk with agents who are actually part of the organization.

Ask them about their experience. That is exactly what experienced agents should do before making a brokerage change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do experienced real estate agents change brokerages?

Most experienced agents move for a combination of reasons rather than a single one: greater flexibility to run their business their own way, better overall economics once caps and fees are counted, accessible leadership, applicable training, a collaborative culture, and the ability to grow a team or expand into additional markets without giving up an established brand.

What is Omnia Elevate?

Omnia Elevate is an agent development organization within JLA Realty, a licensed Texas real estate brokerage led by Broker/Owner John Altic. Omnia Elevate is not itself a brokerage. It provides training, coaching, collaboration, and leadership support to agents licensed with JLA Realty.

What should I ask before I change brokerages?

Ask about the commission split, the annual cap, what happens after you cap, franchise or royalty fees, desk or office fees, whether E&O insurance is included, required technology purchases, whether training or coaching costs extra, and any lease-related costs. Then model your own production against those numbers rather than comparing headline splits.

Can I keep my own CRM, brand, and systems?

Yes. Agents joining JLA Realty – Omnia Elevate continue operating within their own business ecosystem, including their CRM, database, marketing, and personal or team brand, subject to brokerage policy, TREC advertising rules, and other applicable requirements.

Is training at JLA Realty – Omnia Elevate free?

Several resources are open to any Texas real estate professional at no cost, including the Contracts Boot Camp CE class and the free training video library. Member calls such as the M.A.D. Call, the weekly Omnia Elevate Organization Call, S.O.A.R. Mastermind, THRIVE in Action, and coaching with Jeremy Williams are available to JLA Realty – Omnia Elevate members with no additional coaching split.

Where does JLA Realty – Omnia Elevate operate in Texas?

Active markets include Greater Houston, Greater San Antonio, and Corpus Christi and the Texas Coastal Bend, with expansion into additional Texas regions underway. JLA Realty is a licensed Texas real estate brokerage and services are provided in Texas only.
