Relationships Are Still the Greatest Business Strategy: Lessons Learned Over Lunch at The Capital Grille in The Woodlands
Relationships are still the greatest business strategy. Artificial intelligence is transforming nearly every industry, from automated workflows to predictive analytics, and businesses have access to more technology than ever before. Yet one question keeps rising to the surface for entrepreneurs, business leaders, REALTORS®, brokers, sales professionals, and executives alike: what will always separate great leaders from everyone else?
The answer isn’t another AI tool. It isn’t a better CRM. It isn’t a more sophisticated marketing funnel. It’s relationships.
The Lunch
A Lunch That Reinforced an Important Leadership Principle
Today I had lunch with a great friend at The Capital Grille in The Woodlands, Texas, someone I’ve had the privilege of watching build an incredible career from the ground up. His success didn’t happen overnight. It was earned through consistency, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to people.
Listening to his perspective was both encouraging and affirming. What he shared wasn’t the latest business trend or an innovative technology strategy. Instead, he reminded me of something many organizations seem to be forgetting in today’s digital world: relationships are still the greatest competitive advantage.
Presence Over Position
Leadership Doesn’t Happen From an Ivory Tower
He explained that his position could easily be managed from behind spreadsheets, reports, dashboards, and closed-door meetings where every decision is driven by numbers. But that’s not how he leads. His philosophy has always been remarkably simple:
- Get out from behind the desk.
- Spend time with your people, know them, care about them, and invest in them.
- Know their spouses’ names, their children’s names, and their grandchildren.
- Know their hobbies, their favorite restaurants, and what’s happening in their lives.
Those aren’t random details. They’re evidence that relationships aren’t a management technique; they’re genuine care. And genuine care builds something no software ever will: trust.
Technology & Trust
AI Is Powerful, But It Can’t Replace Human Connection
As someone who spends significant time studying artificial intelligence and helping others understand how AI can improve productivity, I firmly believe technology has an important place in business. AI helps us become faster, more organized, more efficient, and more informed.
But AI cannot replace the value of authentic human relationships. It cannot sit across the table from someone and encourage them during a difficult season. It cannot celebrate life’s milestones with sincerity. It cannot build trust simply by consistently showing up. Technology should enhance relationships, not replace them.
The businesses that thrive over the next decade won’t simply be those that adopt AI the fastest. They’ll be the organizations that use technology while never losing sight of the people they serve.
Leading From the Trenches
Great Leaders Stay Connected
One phrase from our conversation kept replaying in my mind throughout the afternoon: lead from the trenches, not from the ivory tower.
Great leaders don’t isolate themselves. They stay connected. They listen. They ask questions. They mentor, encourage, and celebrate wins. They walk through challenges alongside their people. Leadership has never been about position. It’s always been about presence.
Our Culture
This Is Exactly What We’re Building at JLA Realty – Omnia Elevate
As we talked, I couldn’t help but reflect on what we’re building at JLA Realty – Omnia Elevate. Today our organization has grown to 49 agents and teams across Texas. While that number is exciting, it isn’t what motivates me most.
What excites me is the momentum, the culture, the friendships, the collaboration, and the willingness to help one another succeed. Our growth hasn’t come from flashy recruiting campaigns or empty promises. It’s been grassroots. It’s been authentic. It’s been fueled by relationships, and reinforced through hands-on development like our THRIVE training in The Woodlands.
We’ve built an organization where people genuinely celebrate each other’s victories, share knowledge freely, encourage one another during difficult seasons, and believe everyone can succeed together. That’s a culture you can’t manufacture. It’s built one relationship at a time.
Why It Matters in Real Estate
Why Relationships Matter More Than Ever in Real Estate
Real estate has always been, and will always remain, a relationship business. Clients don’t simply hire the person with the newest technology. They hire someone they trust. Someone who communicates. Someone who listens. Someone who genuinely cares about helping them make one of the biggest financial decisions of their lives.
The same principle applies to recruiting, leadership, coaching, and every strategic partnership in our industry, including title companies, lenders, and inspectors. Technology creates efficiency. Relationships create loyalty.
The Setting
The Capital Grille – The Woodlands: More Than a Great Meal
Some of the best business conversations don’t happen in conference rooms. They happen around a table. The Capital Grille in The Woodlands provided the perfect setting for meaningful conversation. Known for its exceptional service, elegant atmosphere, expertly prepared steaks, fresh seafood, and outstanding hospitality, it’s a place where professionals regularly gather to strengthen relationships, celebrate milestones, and discuss ideas that shape businesses and careers.
And while the conversation itself was the highlight of the afternoon, I also discovered something equally memorable: they serve one of the best slices of coconut cream pie you’ll find anywhere. Some meetings leave you with business insight. Others leave you with dessert recommendations. This one delivered both.
The Takeaway
The Business Lesson I’ll Remember
When I look back on today’s lunch, one message stands above everything else: relationships are not a distraction from business. Relationships are the business strategy.
Technology will continue to evolve. Artificial intelligence will continue to improve. Marketing platforms will continue to change. But people will always remember how you made them feel. They’ll remember whether you showed up, whether you listened, and whether you invested in them without expecting anything in return.
Those investments produce returns that never appear on a spreadsheet but often become the foundation for extraordinary businesses and lifelong friendships. I’m incredibly blessed to have people in my life who invest in me, challenge me, encourage me, and support me, not just professionally, but personally. Those relationships are worth far more than any metric you’ll ever find on a dashboard.
Final Thoughts
Use the Technology, But Never Lose the People
If you’re building a business, leading a team, growing a real estate organization, or simply trying to become a better leader, here’s my encouragement: use technology, leverage AI, and become more efficient, but never let efficiency come at the expense of relationships.
The greatest leaders will always be remembered not because they managed numbers exceptionally well, but because they loved, served, developed, and invested in people exceptionally well.
A sincere thank you to Kevin Clark, President of Capital Title’s Southeast Texas Division, for taking the time to invest in me over lunch. Your wisdom, leadership, and reminder that relationships remain the foundation of lasting success were exactly what I needed to hear. I appreciate your friendship, your encouragement, and your example of leading with people first.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Why are relationships still the greatest business strategy in an AI-driven world?
Because trust, loyalty, and reputation are built between people, not by software. AI can make a business faster, more organized, and more informed, but it cannot sit across the table from someone during a difficult season, celebrate milestones with sincerity, or earn trust by consistently showing up. The organizations that thrive pair technology with genuine human connection.
What does “lead from the trenches, not the ivory tower” mean?
It means staying connected to your people instead of managing only from spreadsheets, dashboards, and closed-door meetings. Leaders who lead from the trenches spend time with their teams, listen, ask questions, mentor, encourage, and walk through challenges alongside them. Leadership is less about position and more about presence.
Can AI replace human relationships in real estate or business?
No. AI is a powerful tool for efficiency and productivity, but it cannot replace authentic relationships. In real estate especially, clients choose professionals they trust to guide one of the biggest financial decisions of their lives. Technology creates efficiency; relationships create loyalty.
How does JLA Realty – Omnia Elevate build a people-first culture?
Through grassroots, relationship-driven growth rather than flashy recruiting campaigns. Agents and teams celebrate each other’s wins, share knowledge freely, and encourage one another. The culture is built one relationship at a time and supported by ongoing training, coaching, and collaboration.
How large is JLA Realty – Omnia Elevate?
As of this writing, the organization has grown to 49 agents and teams across Texas. That growth has been fueled by authentic relationships and a collaborative culture rather than empty promises.
Why is real estate considered a relationship business?

The same is true for recruiting, leadership, coaching, and partnerships with title companies, lenders, and inspectors. Relationships are the foundation of long-term success.
How can REALTORS® use AI without losing the human touch?
Use AI to handle repetitive, time-consuming work such as organizing information, preparing first drafts, and surfacing insights, so you have more time for the conversations that matter. Let technology enhance your relationships and follow-up rather than replace the personal connection your clients and team value.
